ELECTRIC LIGHT CHARGES,

PROPOSAL FOR REDUCTION. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. A recommendation that the charge for lighting current should be reduced by. one penny a unit, making the net cost to-the' consumer of fivepence, was made by the Finance Committee to the City Council. The Mayor, in supporting the proposal, referred to the good financial position of the department, and said the proposed reduction might have a good effect upon certain private concerns, for instance, the Gas Company. The council warmly difcussed the. proposal. Several members attacked it on the grounds that it was an "electioneering sop" offered by a dying council, and the matter saould bo left to the new council, particularly as the officers of the department had not reported on it. The estimated loss to the council by the change was said to be £13.00() a year, while the consumer wouldbenefit on an average by tenpence a month. Another point mentioned was that the council had had to refuse hundreds of applications for supply owing to the lack of power and equipment, whereas the reduction in price would imply an", increased demand. The proposal was finally referred back to the Finance Committee.
