GENERAL'S APPRECIATION. ] i ( "GRATITUDE OP MILLION'S." [FROM ova ow.v correspondent.] ; LONDON. Jan. 3. At Christmas Brigadier-General 0. S. Richardson, commanding the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the United Kingdom, sent the following, message to Colonel the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, commissioner of the Red Cross: — On behalf of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the United Kingdom I'wish to think you and the members of the New Zealand Red Cross for their selfsacrificing efforts and good work durine the past year in connection with the various activities in which the New Zealand Red Cross has been engaged. We are all thankful the war is over, but in the future, wo all shall be able to recall pleasant memories of that otherwise tragic period, 1914-18. We have seen the dark side of the picture of war with its anger, hate, and destruction, and the work of the various Red Cross organisations has provided j us with a vision of the other side of the | picture, with love, devotion, and restorai tion, administered by the worker in this , j organisation who, during the past four: and a-half years, have earned the thanks i I and gratitude of millions of soldiers and , their relatives. We wish you and the j members of your organisation a happy | Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year." i Colonel Rhodes' reply is as follows ' "On behalf of the members of the New Zealand Red Cross I desire to thank you tor vour expression of appreciation of (lie work of our organisation, and for your i good wishes to all for a happy Christmas ! and New Year.
