REMUERA HOCKEY GROUND.

Sir,—At a meeting of Remuera ratepayers on Thursday last, in reply to a question, I stated that the- Mayor had promised if the Dilworth Trustees should attempt to cut up and sell the hockey ground, that the City Council would intervene. In ten day's issue, Mr. Gunson characterises my statement as quite contrary to fact, and says, in effect, that no such promise was ever made. I fear (he Mayor's memory has failed him. May I ask h.m to tiara up the Herald of September 28 last, where the Mayor fa reported as stating; ' to the secretary of the Auckland Hockey Association, "that the council had no desire to take over the ground, so long as. • it is used for its present purpose, but in the event of % its being lost to sport by being cut up"for building purposes, then the counoil would at once move." I quote tho exact words of the report, the accuracy of which' has never been challenged. Perhaps His Worship will 1.6 good enough to explain how he reconciles his express promts'! last year ft f comic"' •< sir a with his denial now that my such pro* mise was made. The mater is important, because I know that Remuera people relied on the Mayor's undertaking, and consequently refrained from further action when the matter was acute.' C. J. Pabr.
