i GUILTY OF SERIOUS OFFENCE. i A charge 'of indecently assaulting an eight-year-old girl was preferred against ' a badly-crippled man,' Ernest Brett, aged : 39, beforo Mr. J. B. Wilson, S.M., at the ' Police Court yesterday. After the police J evidence had been given, accused pleaded . ' guilty, and was committed to the Supremo ' , Court for sentence. Theft of a motor-tyre, valued at £7 19s, 1 ,the property of the, British Rubber Cora1 ' pany, was denied by a young man, George IT. Rumble. Evidence was given that in 'April last accused sold, for £5 10s. a '' motor-tyre bearing a number and marks similar to those on one of two tyros stolen from tho British Rubber Company.. Accused swore that in January he obtained the tyre from H.Sapßford, manager, of the company, who was to charge it. to his, accused's account, but this was' denied by Mr. Sapsford. The magistrate said ho f could not believe that Rumble, who had admitted, he knew the value of motor--5 tyres, would sell for £3 10s & new article - which he alleged was debited against him at £7 19s. His story was ridiculous. A , sentence of three month', imprisonment . was imposed. , A charge of stealing at Napier on July ; 18 a diamond ring, valued at £30, the i property of Irene McKenzie, was preferred j against Thomas Wallace, aged 50 years, . but, on the application of Chief? Detective jMcMahon, accused was remanded until 'Monday. . ' - 'i Convicted of having stolen a scarf, ' valued at 10s 6d, and £1 in money, the property of Florence Bedfern, a young 1 woman named Maud McDonald was 1 brought before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., . for sentence. The conviction was entered [ on October 30, when defendant was released, on condition that she remained . with a relative; at Cambridge. This she J. had- {ailed to do, and the police asked that ' she be placed under some restraint. In ; answer to the magistrate, defendant re--5 fused to go 'to ■ the Solvation Army J Rescue Home, whereupon he again con- ' victed her, and ordered her to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, •.which course would not be pursued provided she did not leave her parents' home •'at Whangarei without first having ob-. ' tained' their consent and the approval of J the police. « 1 A conviction was entered against I Thomas King for using threatening behaviour in Shortland Street, whereby a breach of .the peace was occasioned. For drunkenness and procuring liquor : while prohibited, Elizabeth W. Carswell f was convicted and ordered to cone up for . sentence if called on, in which ,;aso alio i, will be committed to Pakatoa Island. pi Drunkenness was admitted by three first i' offenders.
