ffilAL AREAS AT DARGAYILLE. Tho farm experiments conducted under ill 1) auspices of the Dafgiivillo Farmers' Jnion and the manual and technical jranch of the Auckland Education Board lave now assumed definite shape. For some months past preparatory cultivation las been carried out bj*4he experimenters, Messrs. Cave, Hay, and Col more Williams, ind the sowing o"f the various crops is to be undertaken at once. Tho main object) is .to ascertain what crops aro best suited to provide fodder for dairy stock during the lean seasons of the year. -Mr. Hay's land is heavy kahikatca swamp, which has just been reclaimed from the bush - . and ploughed for the first time in October. Trials of such fodder crops as millet, maize, sorghum, sudan grass and marigolds are being made. Mr. Cave's land is, lighter and . has worked down to a better tilth. Here two varieties of lucerne, Hunter River and Marlborough have been sown in uninoculated soil, together with basic super at about 4cwt per acre. On? this area maize . (seed and • fodder varieties)carrots, swedes, mangolds and rape are .undergoing trial. The effect of light and heavy dreejir ings of ground Te Kuiti limestone is also being tested by applications of dressings of scwt and ,15cwt per aero to' each half of whole area-. Mr. Colmoro Williams' property is i situated on the gum lands to the west of Dargavilie. Five different methods af establishment of pastures are being, tried . in acre lots, Two seed mixtures; with cocksfoot as the predominant grass aro being 4 tried under various conditions, 1 in conjunction with different manures, in which lime and phosphates are the chief ingredients. In all these trials, careful accounts of all expenditure arid work done are being kept so that whatever useful results they provide will life available for practical ■• application to large areas of alluvial swamp and the gum lands of the North of Auckland. ;?
