The signing of the armistice was officially announced at 10.20 a.m., although an unofficial rumour was again in currency a few minutes earlier. The news spread like wildfire. There were extraordinary scenes of enthusiasm mingled with expressions of thankfulness, and these were manifested throughout the country. The public was beside itself with joy, Bells pealed and maroona were fired at all police and fire stations in celebration.
