THE LICENSING QUESTION.
MR. C. A. WILKINSON'S PROPOSAL. [BY (TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. _ A new method of dealii with the licensing question was suggested in the House of Representatives this evening by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Egmont). His idea was that Parliament should be elected at tho next general election for four years, and at the same time a poll should be taken on the licensing issue. Should No-license be carried the hotels should be cloned 18 months later without compensation. Parliament and the people would thus have an opportunity of contrasting the effect of license upon tho country for 18 months and of prohibition for the following two and arhalf years. The election following could be fought upon tho prohibition issue.
