He will take up his new duties in about a fortnight, The Hon. George Fowlds yesterday -nan unanimously elected vice-chairman of tho Auckland 'University College Council in succession to the late Dr. W. C. W. McDowell. Mr. Thomas O'Keeffe, who died ifecently at Christchurch, at the age of 79, was a veteran of the Maori wars. A native of I Limerick, he migrated to Melbourne as a, voung mar!, coming to Auckland hi 1862. Mr. O'Keiiil'e enrolled in tha Military Settlers' Brigade, in which < be 1 rose to the rank el sergeant, and with which he took part in many of the principal fights in Auckland and Taranaki. At the «oss of the war he went to Canterbury, and was in charge of the early tree-planting at.Hagley Park, Christchurch.
