TWO CROSSINGS OP THE HAUTE DEULE CANAL FORCED. OVER 8000 PRISONERS TAKEN IN FLANDERS BATTLE Australian and N.Z. and Bouter. (Reed. 10 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 15Sir Douglas Haig reports: We crossed the Haute Deule Canal on both sides of Pont-a-Vendin, four miles north-east of Lens, and captured Estcvolles, Meurchin and Bauvin in that region. Further north we made progress in the neighbourhood of Haubourdin, two m.les south-west of Lille. An earlier report stated: The British attacked towards Courtrai this morning and captured important villages. The total number of prisoners exceeds 8000. Six complete batteries, with teams, were captured. The Belgians and French also captured many important villages. Allied airmen bombed hostile concentrations and trains, and attacked the infantry with machine-guns. British monitors assisted. Numerous fires are reported behind the German lines.
