ORDER OF GOOD SHEPHERD.
SUCCESSFUL YEAR'S WORK
The annual meeting of the Order of the Good Shepherd was held yesterday, the Anglican Bishop of Auckland, Dr. A. W. Averill, presiding.
The report stated that the mission depot had been open one day per week all the year, though war needs had depleted the number of parcels necessary to supply those who called. Hitherto the Order had kept an absolute veil of over its purity, and preventive work for girls. This work had been carried on privately for years, and could not have further comment The work among young married women had provided ample evidence of a complete absence of training for the holy and sacred vocation of home life. It would seem, the report continued, that every other calling or business required preparation, except this, the most important of all, both to the individual and the race. This lack of training was not confined to any one class or type, and from it came ill-health, many anxious and weary hours, and tragedy. The day nursery, the report added, had continued its useful work, the numbers being normal. Sister Hannah, superior of the Order, who moved the adoption of the report, said the Order's purity work for girls had not been mentioned in the annual report previously, but, in view of public discussion on the subject, she thought it well to state that preventive work among boys and girls had not been neglected. The importance of women's work in the church was stressed by Miss Griffin and the Rev. A. J. Greenwood. The latter said there was no doubt the moral conditions among the children of the community were far from what they ought to be. The Rev. F. R. Burgin paid a tribute to the work done by the Order among wives of soldiers. Dr. Averill, in a brief address, advocated the formation of a district nursing association.
The following committee was elected— Ven. Archdeacon W. Calder, Mesdames Nelson, H. Campbell, and G. Hunt, Misses Blades, Jackson and Bent, Messrs. T. L. Thompson, W. J. Crowther, and H. S. Brabant. Votes of thanks were accorded Messrs. W. J. Crowther, hon. secretary, and G. B. Osmond, auditor.
