APPLICATIONS FOR LEAVE.
POSITION OF SERVICE BOARDS
Six appeals for leave for soldiers now on active service—Corporal N. C. Bass Privates E. Joyaht, and J. Stanley! Trooper H. Thomas, and Gunners W. J Nelson, and Albert Dixon—were heard yesterday by the First Auckland Military Service Board. In each case the board was unable to make any recommendation for furlough. Ihe decision of the board 18 the outcome of special instructions receiyed from the authorities. n future, the return of wounded and sick soldiers will be decided by medical authorities overseas No action is to be taken b New Zealand except that Base Records will cable to England, at the appellant's cost, to ascertain whether, in the opinion of the Imperial authorities, a soldier is fit for service after absence from the firing-line on account of wounds, etc. I
The selection for duty furlough of men with not less than throe years' service is at the discretion of a general officer at the front Such furlough is intended as a reward for long service and good conduct, Iho period allowed in New Zealand will be four weeks. All applications must bo made at the front by the soldiers themselves.
The return of a fit soldier on the plea of private business can only be granted when the business requires urgent attention, Soldiers returned homo for this reason, who have served over three years, are entitled to duty furlough, in addition to any extra leave that may be recommended by a Military Service Board, boldiers homo on business leave, with less than three years' service, will not receive P?J.\ unl " s "commended specially by a Military Service Board. ' '
