ASSAULT IN ASYLUM.
' ONE MONTH IN GAOL.
[by telegraph.—press association.]
' . .WELLINGTON, Wednesday. An ox-attendant at Porirua Mental Asylum, named Hugh Anderson, was today sentenced to a month's imprisonment for assaulting a patient of the institution, who has since died.
The medical superintendent said he found no bruises on the patient's face, and the assault had not accelerated death. Accused had been dismissed just prior to the' assault.
Anderson, in evidence, said he might have feigned to strike the man, or might even have struck' him to frighten him back to his bed, but the blow was not more than a mere flip. He had gone to the sick to give the new attendant advice and say farewell to the patients. The magistrate said if the assault had been committed on a healthy person a nominal penalty would have been inflicted.
