GAINS BY FRENCH FORGES.
CONJUNCTION WITH BRITISH
FIGHTING NORTH OF AISNE. (Received 1.30 am.) A .and N.Z.-Reuter. LONDON, Sept, 19. A French communique states :—During yesterday our troops, operating in conjunction with the British army, made progress in the region west of St. Quentin, between Holnou and Essigny-le-Grand, on a front of over six miles. Notwithstanding desperate resistance we advanced our lines an average of a mile and a-quar-ter and reached the western outskirts of Franciily-Selancy, two miles due west of St. Quentin, and captured Savy Wood and Fontaine-les-Clerasus. Further south we held the southern outskirts of Coutescourt and have approached Essigny-ie-Grand. We took several hundred prisoners. .
North of the Aisne we continued our progress vest of Juoy. The enemy delivered strong counter-attacks on the plateau east of Allemant. Our counterattack drove the enemy back and resulted in fresh gains of ground and prisoners.
