AUCKLAND COMMITTEES : FORMED.
Thi arrangisment of a programme for this year's "Our Day" ; Empire \, Appeal, ; on October 24, was the object of a meeting held? at the Town Hall yesterday, under .the auspices of the Joint Committee of the - Auckland; Centre of the New Zealand branch [of the British Red : Gross and .the Order of St. John. Those present repre- ; sented - various patriotic bodies and other Auckland societies' which have been prominent in' assisting patriotic- effort* in the past*
v. The , Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, who ! presided, referred to• the '^ fine ;,* response ): mads •by i the citizens of Auckland -to last year's .''Out Day " appeal. The claims of patnotib work s aim Red Cross : work especially, had become' greater than ever, hut it was gratifying to be able to state I that the generosity of citizens had handsomely : met all demands. V'.' * ;':['„• On the Mayor's suggestion/ those present % formed \ themselves into&' ; general committee; of which Mr.; C. F. Bickford was unanimously appointed chairman. l : ; ' It was decided ; that an organising committee be formed, to; which every society 4" and institution in Auckland should be , in- 1 : vited fto appoint two delegates. Mr/ George Fleming L was ■■. appointed organising secretary. h "A number of money-raising schemes were r discussed, including several which 1 had proved most successful in _ Australia. One ;-y of these was the : distribution of small Bed ; | Cross flags, to be shown in the windows ig of all ; houses, shops,'- etc. The question of '% raising money by ; the : assessment scheme recently worked by Mr. Bickford | with V peat success in country centres, also the holding , of j stalls, \ and other i suggestions, A was referred to organising committee.
