TIMBER-RAFTER DROWNED.
ATTEMPTED RESCUE FAILS.

.. WHANGAREI, Thursday. ' The body of-Mr. Reginald G. Halliday, who was drowned in the Mangakahia River on August ■ 6, when timber rafting was recovered'yesterday. An inquest was held to-day. beforo tho acting-coroner, Major Clark Walker, and a jury. $i Tho evidence showed that Mr. Halliday waded into the stream for tho purpose of'releasing his. towing-wire, which had fouled a rock. He stepped into a deep hole and < was swept away. ' A gallant effort to. rescue him was made by. Mr. Norman ' Pattullo, ' who dashed into the river on horseback and caught Mr: Halliday by the hair. His horse, however, was carried off it« feet; and the attempted rescue . failed. . ■...,' ' . . . ,
