BRITISH PENSION SCHEME.
! " I >! INADEQUACIES ALLEGED. j , A. and N.Z. LONDON, Aug. 4. I | Mr. J. M. Hogge, Liberal member for 1 , East Edinburgh, discussing the credit 3 vote, protested against the inadequacy of, I the scale of war pensions, especially for , : widows with children. The whole scheme was full of anomalies. Re also con- j . demned the proposed voluntary fund ap- I ' peal for £3,000,000 for disabled men as a , disgrace to the Government. ! Other speakers supported the protest, ; ■ urging that disabled fighters and their - i dependants should not have to depend on ; I charity ! , ! Mr. 11. W. Forster, Financial Secre-; ' tary to the War Office, in reply, said ' that the Government sympathetically: considered pensions. He believed the scheme fair and equitable, remembering 'the earnings of soldiers in civil life. Iho majority of women were s" >. iently strong and willing to do work. llie Pen-1 pion Committees were empowered to deal ' with exceptional cases, therefore there ' was no reason for a general increase for J p those who did not really need it. ; , — —
