♦ ESCAPE FROM SOMES ISLAND. [bt telegraph.—press association-.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. A military inquiry regarding the escape of four German prisoners from Somes Island was opened yesterday, and will probably continue two more days. It is not open to the press. DOMINION WAR PENSIONS. «— ANNUAL LIABILITY, £1,160,000. [BT TELEGRAPH.—owx corresposdekt] WELLINGTON'. Sunday. The War Pensions Department, during July, recorded 1208 claims, 898 being from discharged soldiers, and 310 from dependants. The total number of claims lodged since the Act came into operation is 24,885, consisting of 16,608 from soldiers and 8277 from dependants. New pensions granted in July were:—Two permanent pensions to "soldiers of an annual value of £111: temporary pensions to soldiers 854, annual value, £64.935; pensions to dependants 110, annual value, £5124 : pensions to widows 60, annua! value, £7041 (including pensions to childret); pensions to dependant? other than wid >ws 213, annua! value £6729: total, 1244 pen.- ..is, annual value, £8'\940. The annual liability for war pensions on July 31, was approximately £1,160,000.
