Macfarlane, I • butcher, in the business part of the town, | opposite the Hikuramii Hotel. It might' , have spread, only for the prompt arrival . of a volunteer lire brigade, whose efforts ' j confined .the flames to part of the dwelling ] and shop, which was completely gutted. The premies were insured in the South . British Office, hut the occupants are . heavy losers. Saturday supplies, ready ' for delivery, were c -mpletely ruined. Mr. Macfarlane, who was asleep when . the fire broke out, had to force his way! ] out by breaking a window, and sustained severe cuts or, one arm, necessitating , surgical attention. '
