AUCKLAND FISH SUPPLIES.
«. BETTER CATCHES RECORDED. Fish have been more, plentiful during the present week than lias been the case for some time past. With the improvement in tho weather, the fish are again settling on the trawling grounds. Mr. E. J. Carr, chairman of the Markets Committee of the City Council, slated yesterday that a distinct improve ment had been shown in the supplies coming to hand at the City Fish Depot, the council's trawler having already brought in between 400 and 500 baskets of fish this week. The vessel leased by the council was also getting better returns than before, and generally the local demands for fish wore being more fully met, although the supply was not yet equal to requirements. The line fishermen were also getting better catches, despite the intensely cold weather. Mr. Carr mentioned that some very fine mullet were being brought in, although the quantity was necessarily small. Mr. (.;. ' Snndford stated that the trawlers owned by Sandford, Ltd., were now meeting with more success than had i boon the caso for some weejts, and he ' expressed the opinion that if the weather ' improved _in the retiring week fish would ' he plentiful agair, and prices consequently easier. Latest advice* from Sydney state that ' smoked schnapper is selling at Is 6d per ; pound. Th.- local price for a similar ' article is now 5d to 6d.
