GERMAN DEFEAT ON MARNE
RESULT BEYOND DOUBT.
FURTHER FRENCH PROGRESS. FORCES WORKING NORTH. (Received 1.30 am.) Times. PARIS. July 22. The French continue to progress beyond Chateau Thierry. They have occupied Etrepilly, three miles to the north. This marks the definite defeat of the enemy in this sector. The evacuation of' Chateau Thierry largely resembled a flight. On the southern front above Chateau Thierry the resistance has gradually broken. The northern forces are still resisting, a series of salients being forced round the villages along tho Soissons road. Tho Americans took, lost and recaptured Vimv, on the Soissons-Yilliers Cotterets railway, under most difficult conditions in a few hours.
