ALLEGED SLANDER.
j REDUCTION OF CLAIM SOUGHT. AjtorHEXT in respect to a motion by tho plaintiff in the action for alleged slander brought by Benjamin C. Chilwell. (Mr. Haddow), architect, against Richard Webster (Mr. Ostler), clerk of works, to reduce the damages claimed from £600 to £49, with tho object of depriving the defendant of the right of having the casn tried by a jury, was heard in the Supremo Court yesterday before Mr. Justice Cooper in Banco. The original action was tried last August, before a Judge and a jury of 12, the plaintiff claiming £500 in respect of each of three alleged 'slander*. The jury found for tho defendant in reapcct to two of the alleged statements, and awarded the
ciucgeu uutitcuiuMiO) aim unaiuvu me plaintiff one farthing damages in respect to the third. _ In February a new trial was ordered in respect of one cause of action, and it was in connection with this case that, leave to amend the statement of claim from £500 to £49 .was sought His Honor reserved his decision, and suggested that the parties should come to a, settlement. •- > j
