POLICE COURT NEWS.
THEFT OF MEAT FROM STEAMER. A charre of stealing 7J!b of meat, value j 5s sd. the property of the Union Steam I Ship Company, was admitted by John G. I Woodward at the Police Court . yesterday before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M. William Forrest (Mr. Singer) admitted receiving it. knowing it to have been stolen. Acting-Sub-Inspector McNamara said that Forrest was seen leaving a Union steamer with a parcel of meat, and when questioned he said Woodward, who was cook on the vessel, had given it to him. When Woodward was interviewed he admitted taking it from the vessel. Woodward, who had previously been convicted, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, and Forrest, who had no record, was fined £2. A young married woman, Charlotte M. Young, was charged with forging and uttering a cheque value £5. and another for £9. Evidence wis given that the accused went to a drapery store, in Queen Street and purchased goods to the value of £1 3s. She tendered a cheque for £5 signed " J. W. Whyte." and was given ( the change. Other goods were ' purchased from a storekeeper at Onehunga by accused's stepson, who tendered 'a cheque for £9. similarly signed, and was given £7 10s 3d change. All the money ! was subsequently refunded to the storekeeper by accused. J. W. Whyte. a I farmer residing at Mangere. said accused had no authority to sign cheques for him. Accused, who pleaded guilty to both charges, reserved her defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed. For being disorderly while drunk, Joseph Franich was fined £2. Charles I". Chase, a second offender for drunkenness, was fined 10s. and six rirstoffending inebriates were dealt with. Wilhelm Knasi, an Austrian, was fined 10s and costs for failing to register as an alien. William H. Worker, on a charge of vagrancy, whs ordered to come up for sentence within six months, conditionally upon him remaining in the Salvation Army Home during that period.
