HAMILTON. Thursday. Ji'DCMF.XT was given to-day by Mr. K. Rawson. S. M. v in the case? against Frederick Jones and Robert Whitton, who were charged with keeping a common gaining house. Mr. Raw a on held that the defendants were at im; as agents for bookmakers, and were liable, therefore, -under the (laming Act. He said he regretted having to accept the evidence of the Hunt Brothers, jn view of the defendant:-' high reputation, but the latter - ? explanation of the letters and telegrams in connection with their own betting transactions was not. to his mind, satisfactory. He would impose a fine of £25 on each defendant. Robert Whitton was fined a futher £25 and costs for betting with an infant. Mr. H. A. Hopkins, oil behalf of Mr. Ostler, gave notice of appeal.
