BRITISH SPY CHARGES.
PROMINENT DEFENDANTS. EX-MAYOR OF SHEFFIELD. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association ißecd. 8 5 p m) LONDON. June 12. Sir Joseph Jonas, ex-Lord Mayor of Sheffield, has been charged at Bow Street, on a charge of communicating information useful to the enemy, between 1913 and June, 1918. The Daily Chronicle states that there is a second defendant, who has been holding a position in a Government department. Both defendants are naturalised British subjects. Sir Joseph Jonas was bom at on the River Rhine. Germany, in 1845, and was educated at Bingen and Cologne. He is a steel manufacturer, being a director of several large firms. He was Lord Mayor of Sheffield in 1905, in which year he was knighted.
