AMERICANS A GROWING FACTOR IN MARNE FIGHTING.
IMPORTANT CAPTURES ON A FOUR-MILE FRONT. Australian and N.Z. (Received 615 p.m.) NEW YORK . June 9. The newspapers are elated at the American achievements on the Marne. The New York World says: " Berlin may yet reconsider its contempt for ' The wooden sword of the west." '' LONDON, June 9. Renter's correspondent at French headquarters, writing on Friday says that the attack by a combined force of French and Americans west of Chateau Thierry on a four and a-half miles front was a brilliant affair. The Germans held a strong line in wooded country. The rrenc.-., on the left, rushing through Veuilly La Poterie and Bussiares captured both villages and crossed the stream, and were progressing towards the heights of Sant Kvesnes when the last reports were received. The Americans on the right advanced their line a mile in the course of the morning, and captured Bouresches. Both forces took prisoners, the number of which has not yet been counted. A correspondent on the American front states that the Americans advanced two miles on a two-mile front in the Chateau Thierry sector, and captured 100 Germans. The correspondent of the United Press on the American front states that the result of America's attacks on the Marne was the stoppage of the German rush. The Americans defeated three divisions of Prussians and Bavarian Landwehr. During three successive days the Americans pushed forward four miles, which was two miles further than ordered, and fell back under orders' They still hold two and a-half miles, and also an important strategic position. ° Australian and N.Z. and Renter LONDON. June 9. An American communique states : North-west of Chateau Thierry hostile attacks on a front of two miles during the night, after artillery preparation, were repulsed with heavy losses to the enemy, who did not reach our lines anywhere.
