SETTLERS' NEED OF ROADS.
CONDITIONS AT KATIKATI. [by TELEGRArH SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] W.MHI. Monday. Dealing with the condition of the main road to Waihi a member of a deputation which waited upon the Minister fo- Lands at Katikati stated that if the road was metalled the settlers could secure their goods by motor. Illustrating what bad roads meant to them, he said that ground lime which cost 19s a ton in Waihi, cost £3 in Ivat.ka: The state of the roads also stopped buyers from coming to the sales and, as a result, the sellers secured' kes for their stock. It was also regarded as a hardship that they could not borrow more than £5000 in one vear. The Minis ter said that he did not think this prohibition was meant to apply to essential works Provided the Minister for Finance cave his consent, :t would be possible for the t*™ ft T- s u y< £7500 one y ear £2500 the next, thus not exceeding the ioOOO per annum limit.
