"TRAFALGAR AND JUTLAND."
LECTURE AT LEYS INSTITUTE. Thk first "lecture of the Leys Institute winter course was given last night by the Rev. A. H. Chappell, whose subject was "Trafalgar and Jutland." Mr. T. W. Leys presided. A large audience listened to the address with interest throughout-. Tho lecturer told the story of Trafalgar, especially dealing with the strategy of the battle, the part played by the more prominent vessels, and the effect, of the fight on Napoleon's European aims. He also gave a description of the battle of Jutland, showing that it was a triumph of British naval .strategy, but rendered tactically ineffective by reason of the approach of i night. The usual descriptions of the. battle's strategy were criticised somewhat i bv the lecturer, who said that the results of the tight- gave, clear proof of the disap- j pointment of the Kaiser as to the prowess i of his high seas fleet. A fine, series of j specially prepared lantern slides was j shown, enabling the lecturer to demonstrate the change in fleet construction and I tactics since Trafalgar. The flag code used 1 at Trafalgar was explained. The lecturer | was accorded a vote of thanks on the j motion of the chairman. j
