MR. JAMES GORDON BENNETT.
A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. May 14. The death is announced of Mr. James Gordon Bennett, proprietor of the New York Herald.
The late James Gordon Bennett was born in 1841. He succeeded his father in control of the New York Herald in 1872. He inaugurated the-publication in England of storm warnings from the United States. At his own expense he equipped and sent the Stanley expedition to Africa in search of Dr. Livingstone. He was an enthusiastic supporter of ocean yacht racing, winning a race from Sandy Hook to the Isle of Wight in 1866, and contesting another from Qneenstown to New York in 1870.
