NEW* PLYMOUTH. Monday. In Irs charge to the grand jury to-day. the Chief Justice referred to the amount of crime directly traceable to drink. He said that at least one-third of the crime in New Zealand was the direct result of the drinking habit, and he added that he thought the people were dead to all sense of humanity towaroV their fellows in not stopping the drinking by which some of the best man in the country were brought to crime. He was also amazed that in the midst of the terrible war the people continued to spend money on drink and pleasure. Those at home appeared to be leaving all the sacrifice to be made by the men who had gone to the front.
