RESERVISTS' APPEALS.

ADJOURNED CASES REVIEWED MATTER FOR EFFICIENCY BOARD. A ntjmbbb of adjourned appeals were reviewed by the First Auckland Military Service Board yesterday. In the adjourned appeal of W. G. Davies, Mangere, a First Division reservist (Mr. Schnauer), counsel said appellant bad been previously granted exemption sine die, or until Class B of the Second Division was called up. Appellant, a married man with one child, was also partially supporting his mother. He had a farm of 30 acres, and was milking 16 cows, the milk from which was supplied to a mill: vendor. Since he was last before the board he had ent-ere'd into an agreement to purchase an additional 18 acres, under the impression that there was a possibility that he might not be called up again. A brother-in-law, who was on the farm when the appeal was heard, left a week later, and was now employed as a stockman. Major Conlan said he had received half-a-dozen letters from people in the district, where there was evidently a strong feeling that this reservist should go to camp. j Cross-examined by Major Conlan, appel-' lant said he had done some horse dealing, 1 and the milking of cows had not been I taker, on recently. His brother-in-law was ; not willing to take over the farm. His wife was delicate, and would be unable, to carry on the farm. J To Mr. Schnauer : He had done no horse dealing this year. He had had no assistance in the work of milking and attending to the farm. He was employed solely in working the farm. J At the request of Major Conlan the appeal was adjourned to secure another report from the Efficiency Board. Support of Mothers. L. C. Falkner, partner in the firm of Fallener and Co., umbrella-makers, said he was partially supporting his mother, who was also a partner in the inisiness. If he went on service he would nave to wind rip the business. Major Conlan stated that the case was before the board in November, and adjourned for inquiry, but had apparently been overlooked. The board intimated that a report would be obtained during the next few days, and adjourned the case for a week. Louis Q. Ross, Ponsonby (Mr. Stanton), applied for a rehearing. Counsel stated that when appellant was first before the board he stated he was supporting his mother. He was advised to apply to the Financial Assistance Board. A certain amount was granted, whereupon the board dismissed the appeal. Appellant had since been notified that the grant made had been rescinded, because appellant had not stated his circumstances clearly, and new facts concerning him had- been placed before the board. The circumstances of appellant were unchanged, he had placed all the facts before the board, ana was completely at a loss to know why th© grant was now refused. Counsel stated that he had written to the Financial Board, asking for the reasons for its action, and received a reply that the matter had been fully explained in a letter to the Military Service Board. The chairman and Major Conlan said that they had received no letter on the subject. The appeal was adjourned until the Financial Assistance Board was written to, -and replied explaining its action. Reservist With Aged Father. The appeal of E. J. Moir, Remuera (Mr. A. E. Skelton), which had been adjourned for inquiry, was reviewed. Major Cfenlan read a police report which substantially bore out the evidence given by appellant, The reporting constable suggested that appellant's aged father, who required the personal attention of appellant daily, might be " cared for in some institution. The question as to whether appellant was entitled to financial assistance on his parents' account was discussed. The chairman said the Financial Assistance Board was now granting assistance in the way of payment , for attendance on the aged parents of reservists, but the amount of assistance which the board allowed would be ascertained before the appeal was finally determined. _ The case was referred to Wellington. A further extension of leave until August 1 was granted Frederick A. Hansen, Vincent Street, a CI reservist, on account of his wife's ill-health. Robert A. Mace, Mount Eden, was granted leave until JulyJLB, owing to his wife's ill-health. Arthur W Rogers, Ponsonby, a CI reservist ordered into camp on May 9, asked for further time, owing to meeting with an accident to his ankle. Leave was granted until June 6. Hugh Miller, a seaman, was exempted sine die, on the application of the secretary of the Seamen's Union. Leave until June 20 was granted Fredk. G. Pennell, Panmure, whose appeal was adjourned last August until one of his three brothers returned. Appellant stated that one .brother had been killed in action, and another had returned home invalided. Under the altered circumstances he wished to withdraw his appeal.
