MAGISTRACY CRITICISED.
NEED FOR BETTER SALARIES. MINISTER SYMPATHETIC. [by TELEGRAPH.— associ ITIOJf.) WELLINGTON. Monday. A deputation from law societies, headed by Sir John Findlay, waited upon the Minister for Justice regarding the salaries and appointments of magistrates. It was suggested that better .men were required for the magistracy. The deputation -maintained that magistrates could not be secured at thu present salaries, and > that they should be paid from £800 to £503 a year. The retiring allowance, also, wa» too small. The Minister said he wanted to make a great change in the magistracy. If lie could persuade the Government to agree to the principle of altering superannuation so as to make the retiring allowance onethirtieth, instead of one-sixtieth, for every year of service, a great part of the difficulty would be overcome. He had said in Parliament that he thought the salary of a metropolitan magistrate should be £1000. However, before he dealt with salaries he ought to deal with superannuation, and he suggested that the scheme contemplated the retirement of eight magistrates. The matter would receive his attention.
