Most of the business premises in Queen Street were liberally bedecked with bunting, and as the recruits, marching td inspiring music by the 3rd, Auckland, Mounted Riles and the Temperance Guards Bands, turned into this thoroughfare from Wellesley Street, the majority of those employed in these establishments made their way to the footpath and cheered them on their way. At the station the men quickly entrained, ana as the train moved out they were bidden farewell by a very large number of next of kin and citizens. •

An atractive feature of the send-off was a guard's van attached to the train, which had low prettily decorated with greenery and flowers by a number of King's Empire Veterans. The van bore the inscription: "The King's Empire Veterans wish God-speed to the Gallant Fortieths." Lieutenant-Colonel W. R. C.
