HOTEL AND SHOPS BURNED
OUTBREAK AT KAIKOURA. [DT TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] KAIKOURA, Monday. A fire which broke out at four o'clock on Sunday morning resulted in tho destruction of Shields's Adelphi Hotel, Messent's billiard room and barber's shop, Mrs. Stirling's refreshment rooms. A. J. Whitehead's jewellery shop, and Strange's branch of drapery. Mr. Whitehead's properly was not covered and he estimates his loss at about £1000. Messent is uninsured, and his loss is about £500. Mrs. Stirling is insured in the North British Office for £100, while St range and Company's insurances are £10C0 in the London and Liverpool and Globe Office, and £1500 in the Yorkshire Insurance Company, besides various smaller sums in other offices. The licensee of the Adelphi Hotel had his furniture and personal effects insure;! for £150 in the Guardian Assurance Office. The morning was calm, or the loss would have been much greater. The firo originated in one of the shops.
