WRECKAGE ON EAST COAST.
FIRE AT SEA WITNESSED. SUPPOSED EXPLOSION ON SHIP. [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHAEATANE. Monday. In- connection with the wreckage recently found on the east const, at Te Araroa, Wainui Beach, and also off Gable End Foreland, several residents of Matata, 14 miles up the coast from Whakatane, state that about the beginning of December they observed on the horizon, about 8 p.m., a light in the direction of Cape Runaway. The light gradually Increased in isize for about a-quarter of an hour, and then suddenly developed into a great flare. It was apparently about 60 miles distant, and 30 miles off Cape Runaway. The opinion was strongly held here that a great explosion had taken place aboard some vessel, and it is now believed the o:currence may have had connection with the burned wreckage found at Te Araroa.
