HEAP OF RED ASHES FOUND.

A fire occurred in the operating box of the Strand Theatre some time during Saturday night or Sunday morning. The caretaker visited the box early yesterday morning, when he found a heap of redhot ashes on the floor. The City Fire Brigade was called, and it was found that the films had been burnt and an electric switchboard badly damaged. The plaster on the walls was cracked, but as the walls had been built of ferro-concrete. the fire could get no hold. The operating machines were not affected. The origin of the fire is unknown. The property was insured. THAMES COTTAGE BURNED. LOSS ESTIMATED AT £300. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN . CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, Sunday. An outbreak of fire at about nine o'clock on Saturday night completely destroyed a cottage and all its contents, in lararu Road, owned and occupied by Mr. A.bert Poulgrain. A strong wind was blowing at the time. By good work the fire brigade succeeded in saving the adjoining properties. The building was insured for £100, and the furniture for £50 in the Victoria Office. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The tenants were absent from 6 p.m., and no fire'had been used since early in tlv morning. The total loss is estimated at £300. FIVE-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. BLAZE AT CAMBRIDGE. [by TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CAMBRIDGE, Sunday. A five-roomed house, owned by Mr. H. St : chnoche, and occupied by Mr. T. A. McFarlane, was destroyed by fire last night, during the latter's absence. Practically all the contents were lost. The house' and . furniture were insured in the State Office.
