The gold returns from the Auckland district mines to hand during the J month, and representing the final clean-ups i for the year 1917, reached a total of £57.201 ' 13s 9d, as against £62,157 lis Id for 1916, , a decrease of £4955 17s 4d. The total value of the bullion won from the mines of the district during the past 12 months was £741.534 7s Bd. as compared with £714.148 4s in 1916, an increase of £27,580 3s Bd. The following is a copy of a cablegram sent to the head office in London of the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Comel pany on Tuesday last:—"We are crushing l « 334 tons per 24 hours; the extraction is ' £1 12s Gd per ion. No. 8 Level, Empire footwall branch: East drive— Breaking down from 250 ft to 325 ft. the average value for a. width of 103 in is 17s 3d per ton West drive-Breaking down from 205 ft to 250 ft: the average value for a width of 161 in is £2 4s per ton: from 250 ft to 270 ft the average 8 value for a width of lOOin is 9s lOd per ton. 3 Royal Lode: The cast drive is now out 32^f * the average value for a width of 58m is' 18s 6d per ton. The crosscut at 2Soft shows the re<-f to be 126 in wide, the average value being 15s 6d per ton. Tho west drive is now out 217 ft. The average value for a width of 54in is lis 4d per ton.
