FIRE IN THE CITY.
BRICK BUILDING DAMAGED.
HAT-MAKERS' STOCK LOST.
A fire occurred at 10.55 last night in a
two-storeyed brick building at the j corner of Wyndham and Hobson Streets, j Residents in the vicinity were considerably startled by the sudden appearance of flames through the roof of the building. The fire occurred on the second floor, which was occupied by Penderleath and Burgess, straw hat i manufacturers. Owing to the highly in- ! flammable nature of the contents the flames swept through that portion of the building with remarkable rapidity, but I the City Fire Brigade succeeded, by ' smart work, in suppressing them before they spread to an adjoining building, occupied by the Auckland Motor Company, which for a time was in danger. The top, portion of the building was gutted, but the ground floor, tenanted by Mr. E. Feltham wood-turner, was only damaged by water.
Details of the insurances on the stock and building were not available last night.
