It is jje :, hoped .that' this Empire appeal on behalf I' ■ of the Red Cross Society will rank as one v ,'- of tho greatest patriotic efforts in the ■fjS history of Auckland. The Joint Committee in Auckland of the British Red Cross Society>and the Order of St., John | is asking the people of the Auckland military district to contribute £50,000. Individual and joint effort has not been spared, 'and all sections of the community are asked to 5 co-operate loyally in the great and worthy cause. Commencing from to-morrow for many .days, Queen Street and soma of the other main ■ thoroughfares will be transformed from their everyday appearanco to literal bowers of. fairyland, and they will become busy hives' for patriotic industry. Stalls of ajl kinds will be erected, and festoons of bunting will form a canopy of riotous colours. One of the- chief attractions will bo the cafe chantant, organised by the Auckland Women's Patriotic League. It will bo held on the ground floor of the town sHall, which is being beautifully decorated -with flowers and foliage. The principal space on the floor will be occupied by 100 % tables, lent by the University authorities. At the tables dainty home-made cakes, scones, sandwiches, with tea" or. coffee, V; will be supplied during the day. Through- , out the day and evening, an enjovablo programme of music, song, and dance will be contributed by leading Auckland artists. f. The Victoria League's effort for "Our Day' will take ,the form of a Red Cross >: market. There will bo five stalls-cakes, I sweets, surprise packets, produce and H flowers—and in the Red Cross shop in Shortland Street, will bo sold all kinds of plain and fancy goods. -An elaborate H| scheme of decorations is being arranged, |p extending the whole length of the market, |H and embracing both sides of Shortland ;,: .• Street, A feature of the decorations will |p he the lighting in the evening.

Various Attractions.

A " witches' cavern" has' been organised .;.;; by the allied - Consuls in Auckland. It will be situated in the basement of the v.. New Zealand Insurance Company's build- ■ V;..' ings. Tho;decorations will be appropriate, ■";; and an Italian orchestra, under the • leadership of Signor Domenico-Vietri, %'., which will'. render selections from well- "-- known Italian-operas. During the'even- '-/>, ing the Auckland people will be afforded an opportunity of listening to some of the - best Italian patriotic sones, : sung by the following Italians Signori Luigi Ferola, ;', Mereo Au.i'elio, C.
