THE LATE HON. J. D. ORMQND> tributes in the house. I • [BY TELEGRAPH.— correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Monday. ! Replying to Mr. L. M. Isitt (Ghristchurch ! North), Mr. Maseey said he hoped to be | able to make a 'statement in a few days regarding the steps to be taken by the ( Government in connection with 1 - the un- ' loading of the overseas vessel for which no labour was offering. Replying to Mr. P. C. Webb (Greymouth) the Hen. W. D. S. Mac Donald ■ , said that the Mines Department was con- J sidering some amendments to the Coal ! Mines Act, and, if possible, they would ( be passed this session. • The.Prime Minister moved the following i resolution; —" That this House records its i high sense of the faithful services ren- ( dered to New Zealand by the late John' |' Davies Ormond, a former member of the . House of Representatives, and a member ; of the Legislative Council and Minister of the Crown, and respectfully tenders to : his family the assurance of its sincere ; ,' sympathy with them in their bereave- 1 , ment." i. I In doing so Mr. Massey traced Mr. Or- I ' mond's career as a public man who had j given the greater part of his life to the , v service of his country. He spoke of him ' as a man of great intellect and a man of < immense initiative, He spoKo in enthusiastic terms of his services to New Zea- , land as a pioneer whose memory they were | | bound to respect and mentioned that his j 1 sons and grandsons were now fighting for i their country. The late Mr. Orraond was j i ' a link, with the past,, and his death would j ; prove a great loss to the public life of the j i Dominion. , 1 1 Sir Joseph Ward, in seconding the' I motion, paid a tribute to Mr. Ormond's ■ many qualities. The late member had been ■ , through the whole of the vicissitudes at-1 1 tendant upon the development of a new' j country. He mentioned that Mr. Ormond j had been one of four surviving Cabinet I Ministers who held office prior to 1878. , ' The other three were Sir Robert Stout,, Sir 0. C. Bowen and Mr. Donald Reid. ' Further tributes were offered by Sir John Findlay, Dr. Newman and Mr. W. ' T. Jennings. | At 8.20 p.m. the House adjourned until to-morrow as a mark of respect to the de- ; ceased.
