TWO SAID TO BE AT LARGE
i Jfe 1 I ALLIED WARSHIPS SEARCHING ix ■ [ RES GAINS CONSOLIDATED GERMAN COUNTER-ATTACK REPULSED . — - BRILLIANT WORK OF NEW ZEALANDERS It is officially announced from Washington that there are two armed German raiders in the South Pacific. Allied warships are searching for them. The Seeadler, a raider which did a considerable amount of damage to allied shipping in various waters, was stranded and abandoned during August, her crew escaping In a motor sloop. This sloop captured a vessel and left 27 white men and 17 natives of the crew on an island in the Pacific, where they are reported to be in great need of food and water. i. Heavy rain has covered the Ypres battle-front in mud. The Germans attempted to recover lost ground at one point, but were repulsed. Apart from this, action has been confined to the artillery. The British have everywhere consolidated their positions and await counter-attacks with confidence. Fuller accounts emphasise the brilliant work done by the New Zealanders in capturing Gravenstafel. Men from all parts of the Dominion were in action, and the division secured its record haul of prisoners, over 1000. There was evidence of the demoralisation of the enemy on the whole front. German officers lost their heads, and troops in reserve and waiting to attack were overwhelmed by the British barrage. Under the paralysing blow picked troops became a defeated rabble. v It is,stated that the Germans are preparing to evacuate Lens. The South American States of Pern and Uruguay have broken off relations with Germany. The Russians captured a height and portion of a village in Bukovina, taking 762 prisoners. They subsequently abandoned the village. , .
