OLD COLONISTS' DEATHS.
MR. EDWARD JONES.
Mr. Edward > Jones, one of the pioneers of Auckland, died at bis residence, East Avenue, Mount Eden, on Saturday. Mr. Jones was born in Ireland in 182S, and arrived in Auckland in 1854. After a time he took up land in the Northern Wairoa district. Later he returned to Auckland, where he resided until the time of his death. Ho leaves five sons and four daughters.
MRS. f ANNIE BUBGOYNE. [BT TELEGEA?-'!-—OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] ' CHBISTCHURCH. Saturday. \. The death occurred to-day of Mrs. Annie Burgoyne as the age of 91 years. The -„ deceased was a very old colonist. She emigrated ifom Bristol to Australia with her first husband, Mr. Appleton, and arrived in New Zealand in 1857. They * lived in the armed constabulary settlement at Poverty Bay, where her husband was in the militia. Ho was killed in the' " massacre when the Maoris descended upon the Poverty Bay settlement. His wife, it is believed, was the only white woman who escaped, the chief scaring her life because shefwas able to speak the native language. Subsequently ehe went to Auckland;** where? she married Mr. A. Burgoyne in 1887. Mr. Burgoyne, who survives his wife, is a veteran of the Maori ware, having served in the's7tb Regiment.
