BROKEN BY VERDUN.

GERMAN GENERAL RETIRED A. and NZ. AMSTERDAM, Sept. 28. The Militair Wachenblatt announces that General von Deimling, of Zabern notoriety, is about to be pensioned off. It is believed that he has been made a scapegoat for the Verdun failure. When Colonel von Renter and Lieu-

tenant von Forstner were indicted for acts of cruelty and oppression committed in Zabern, Alsace, from November, 1913, onwards, General von Deimling took the latter under his protection. General von Detailing was in command of troops at Verdun at the beginning of 1916, when the Crown Prince's army made its disastrous and futile effort to break through ■ the French lines there.
