ALLOTMENT OF PAY.
SUPPORT OF A MOTHER, A i-ATHEno case, illustrating the hardships sometimes imposed upon mothers through the divergence of their son's military pay to other channels, came before the Military Service Board yester- j day, The case was one which had previously been adjourned in order to ascertain whether an allotment made over by a soldier now in camp to a young woman could not be diverted to his mother, a widow, whose only remaining son had beeif called in the ballot, and whose pay would not be sufficient to support, his mother and to discharge payments on the home. As no information had been received as to whether the allotment of the other son could be made over to the mother, the hoard decided to take evidence meantime as to her financial liabilities. The mother stated that one son was already at the front, and she had received word only that morning that another son, a marine engineer, was now lying seriously ill as the result of exposure, following the torpedoing of the transport on which he wi-.s employed. Neither of these two sons was contributing anything to ! her support, and in order to supplement the allowance received from appellant, who was her main support, she was compelled to take in a few boarders, but, owing to various reasons, these were not , permanent, and usually stayed only a few I months at a time. Witness was closely questioned as to the matter of keeping books, and the profit she made from these boarders, but she slated that there was no profit, the money thus obtained going to make up financial arrears for the time when she was without any such assistance. During the questioning, witness appeared considerably distressed, and upon leaving the box, collapsed, and was assisted from the Court in a fainting condition. The board decided to adjourn the case for two weeks, so that the matter of the transfer of the allotment could be , investigated.
