THE ANGLING SEASON.

GOOD SPORT ANTICIPATED.

The trout-fishing season, which opens in the Auckland Acclimatisation Society' 3 district on Monday, is expected to provide excellent sport for anglers this year. It is stated by experts that the heavy rains which have kept the streams in a state of flood during the winter, served to bring food for the fish, which in a good food season uake from 41b to 51b in weight, whiie in a dry season, which means a scarcity of food, little improvement takes placa in the fish. Close to Auckland the Mangatawhiri and other streams north of Mercer have been well stocked, and, providing the water is not too high, should provide good fishing from the beginning of the season. Lake Taka--puna, in which 20,000 good young fish were liberated last season, should also be worth the attention of anglers. The Waihou River, in the Te Aroha district, and the Oraka, at Tiran, are also expected to provide good sport throughout the season. Considerable attention haß been paid for some years past to King Country streams, among the larger of which are the Waipa, Ongarue and Waimiha, while the Mangapu, Mangaotaki, and Mangaohae, in the To Kuiti district, afford a wide choice for those eager to ply the rod and line early in the season. The Wanganui River, at Taumarunui, which is one of the most favoured of King Country trout streams, is usually at its best for sport in November and December, and provides excellent fishing till the end of the season.

The trout-fishing season at Rotorua, Taupo and other districts under the jurisdiction of the Tourist Department, does not open until November 1.
