ALLOWANCES TO SOLDIERS.
Feom the large number of appeals heard by the Military Service Board in which financial hardship is pleaded as a ground for exemption, it would appear that appellants generally are not aware of the fact that through the medium of the board application may be made to the Government for financial assistance in respect of certain liabilities, which would leave them free for service. In many such cases the appellant expresses himself quite satisfied when the board proposes to make recommendation in this direction. On the other hand, there is sometimes misconception as to the Tange of financial obligations thus undertaken. Appellants not infrequently suggest that they be relieved of private debts and other obligations which cannot be assumed by the State. The only liabilities from which appellants may be relieved are the payment of rent, rates and taxes, interest on mortgages, loans, insurance premiums, such payments not to exceed £2 a week. Under no circumstances are personal debts or similar obligations assumed.
