MEAT TRUST MENACE.
WARNING TO PRODUCERS.
, The meat trust menace was referred to by I Mr. S. J. Ambury at the annual meeting I of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Com- ' pany yesterday. " Some producers," ho I said, " will say that the businesses known i as the meat .trust have done us more good i than harm, and I agree to that, but that is not the whole truth. These firms aro i not looking to the immediate present for 1 a profit as most farmers do, but they aro ; securing supplies in all the meat countries i of the world, and have large interests in tie distribution of meat iu Great Britain and other countries, and practically control the prices in the London market. The time may not be far distant when the producers ill this country will view the matter differently from what they now do." Mr. J." K. Makgill, a director of the company, said there was undoubtedly a tendency on the part of farmers to get a little more offered for their stock by unfair competition. Unless the farmers helped, the directors could not do much to stem .the tide. It was necessary for the producers to combine and do their best to guide the meat industry into right channels. They should not be gulled into be- ! lieving the competition was waged from philanthropic motives. Tkev should not shirk the responsibilities of citizenship of I the Dominion and of the Empire.
