SUCCESSFUL OFFENSIVE MADE ON SIX-MILE FRONT.
STUBBORN FIGHTING ON YPRES-MENIN ROAD.

Australian and N.Z. and Renter. (Reed. 1.5 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27. Six Douglas Haig reports: The attack yesterday morning was made on a six-mile front, from south of Tower Hamlets, south-east of Ypres, to the east of St. Julien. It was entirely successful. Tho enemy later made a series of heavy counter-attacks along our new front. Hard fighting continues at certain points. The attack was carried out by English troops south of the YpresMenin Road successfully. We completed the capture of Tower Hamlets spur, and took possession of strong field works on the eastern slopes, these forming our objectives. We repulsed a powerful counterattack from Gheluvelfc. We met with obstinate resistance on the right of our main attack, north of the Ypres-Menin Road. There was heavy fighting on this area, over. which the enemy, launched counter-attacks yesterday. Australian and N.Z. and Reuter. ' (Reed. 12.45 a.raj LONDON, Sept. 27. An earlier report states: Our aeroplanes were extremely active yesterday. Successful raids were carried out on the aerodromes at Courtrai and Cambrai, billets oast of Lens, and hutments south-east of Roulers. A further five tons of bombs were dropped at night at Menin and Wervicq on troops and transports on the roads leading from these points to the battle front. A number of hostile machines were accounted for. Twenty-three were brought down. A three-seator bombing machine was shot down. One of our machines is missing.
