NEW ADVANCE IN FLANDERS

DESPERATE RESISTANCE POLYGON WOOD CLEARED RUSSIA FIRM FOR VICTORY RAIDERS INTERNED IN HOLLAND Another heavy blow has been struck by the British forces In Flanders. After a night of fierce fighting, an attack was made along the whole line of the recent advance, from St. Jnlien in the north to Tower Hamlets, just west of Gheluvelt in the south. A German report admits that the British have advanced a mile in some places. The infantry operations were accompanied by a heavy barrage, and by vigorous aerial bombing. The advance was disputed hotly, particularly in Polygon Wood, the remainder of which the Australians have now cleared, and on the Ypres-Meniu road towards Gheluvelt. On the latter sector three furious counterattacks by the Germans were beaten back. Mr. Lloyd George, accompanied by Sir William Robertson, chief of the Imperial General Staff, visited France at the beginning of the week. Britain and France have sent to Russia a declaration that any German attempt to conclude a separate peace with either on account of Russia's condition would be indignant/v refused, M. Kerensky declares that Russia is vow recovering and. will Two German aeroplanes, both of the newest type, have been brought down at Flushing, in Holland. One, which refused to surrender, was tired upon by a Dutch torpedo-boat, ' and forced to descend. The occupants of both have been interned. The latest raids on London have caused a renewal of the demand for a more vigorous aerial offensive against Germany
