KING'S POLICE MEDAL.

HONOUR FOR MR. J. CULLEN.

The King's police medal was presented by His Excellency the Governor-General, the Earl of Liverpool, to Mr. John Cullen, 1.5.0., ex-commissioner of police, last night on the occasion of the presentation of medals to military heroes or their next-of-kin. The distinction was instituted in 1909 by the late King Edward VII. It may be awarded, on the recommendation of Cabinet Ministers, to any members of the constabulary force and fire brigades throughout the Overseas Dominions in recognition of exceptional and special service, heroism, or devotion to duty. An annual award of the medal should bo made to each of the Dominions, but the total number must not exceed 30 a year. Despite the fact that an annual grant is provided for, this is the first time the distinction has been conferred upon a New Zealander, although it is now eight years since it was instituted.

Ex-Commissioner Cullen was born in County Leitrim, Ireland, in 1851, and joined the Royal Irish Constabulary at the age of 18. Six years later he resigned and came to New Zealand, associating himself with the New Zealand police forco shortly .after his arrival. During the 40 years he was in the force he was stationed, at various times, in the principal towns of the Dominion. In he succeeded Inspector Hickson at Auckland, and in 1912 was appointed Commissioner of Police, being the first New Zealand police official to fill this position. He retired from the police force at the end of last year. Mr. Cullen is now resident in Auckland.
