GERMAN VERSION OF THE FRENCH ATTACK.
ADMISSION THAT DEFENSIVE ZONE WAS ENTERED. Admiralty per Wireless. LONDON. August 20.
A German communique states: At the opening of the new battle before Verdun the French occupied, without fighting, Talou Ridge, on the east bank of the Meuse. Fighting is in full swing on a front of 14$ miles. The infantry attack was preceded by an artillery battle of the greatest intensity, lasting all night.
Australian and N.Z. (Received 9.60 p.m.) LONDON. August 21. A later German communique states: The battle of Verdun is going in our favour. The enemy penetrated our defensive zone in Avocourt Wood and Mort Homme. We repulsed attacks on the oast bank of the Meuse.
